Butler, Emmeline

Emmeline’s wheel-thrown ceramics are inspired by her love of nature, the countryside and the beauty of its many textures; cracked limestone pavements, tree bark and dry exposed peat are reflected in the surface patterns of her work. The uplands have always held a fascination, as a wild and desolate place in the winter, which comes alive again in spring and summer as the curlews and lapwings return to nest. The glorious moorland heather has inspired some of her latest work, with its purple blooms and scorched black woody stems. She uses a finely grogged clay which gives a wonderful feel to the finished piece, and compliments the deeply cracked textures created on the outside.
