Charlton, Ruth

My work is based around the human figure, with particular interest in the modelling of the head. I make detailed, small scale pieces and more symbolic, larger sculptural work. I try to capture expressions and character and, hopefully, produce precious objects that people will cherish. Faces, figures, tealight holders and garden sculptures are made from white clay and decorated with oxides or underglaze colours and painted with brush-on glazes then fired to stoneware temperatures (1200-1280°C). Incense holders and ‘obstacles’ are made from a grogged clay called crank, inlaid with white clay, decorated with oxides and also fired to stoneware.
