Fowell, Mel

Experimentation and investigation remain the key drivers in my work, with individual pieces often being subjected to several firing processes. All work is hand-built and fired to earthenware temperatures or less. Like well-worn beach pebbles, saggar fired pots are given highly tactile burnished surfaces to encourage handling and act as a canvass for markings from the kiln. Other work incorporates bold contrast or strong texture, highlighted with coloured slips, matt or Raku glazes, to create surfaces suggestive of richly lichened rocks and strata.
