Hemsley, Kit

Inspired and taught ‘A’ level ceramics by Mal Magson, 30 years ago, I finally have a kiln and time to continue my fascination with clay. Based in a shed in Bramhope, Leeds, I create forms influenced by a childhood on the coast near Whitby. Coastal textures, colours and forms are mirrored in and on my ceramics. Clay coloured with oxides, stains and underglazes, mainly stoneware and porcelain, is used to create movement in my pieces. I use natural materials such as shells, fossils and coral to mark some of my work, as well as other materials such as lace, hessian and wallpaper.
