McMillan, Gillian

Gillian was born in Southport and at the age of sixteen began her education at Art College. She studied studio ceramics at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, and industrial ceramics at North Staffordshire Polytechnic, and on completion of her degree worked as a designer in industry before leaving the area and setting up her own studio. Her ceramics are hand crafted in porcelain, stoneware or terracotta. Pots are thrown on the wheel or hand built, and decorated with oxides, glazes and lustre. Stoneware and porcelain are fired to 1260°C; the lustre on porcelain is fired again to 700°C. Her inspiration is from natural forms including the sea and rocks.
