Porter, Beverley

After a career in office administration and bringing up my family I returned to education as a mature student achieving a 1st Class Hons Degree in Applied Arts in 2009 at Batley School of Art and Design. I am currently the art technician at a local academy on a part time basis. My ceramics range in scale from small individual figures, which can be picked up and turned in the hand, to larger pieces with a sculptural quality and three dimensional wall hung landscape plaques. I work intuitively with the clay allowing it to dictate the shape and form, gestural marks made in the clay suggest shape and movement. After bisque firing I colour each piece with a combination of underglaze, oxides and coloured slips to emphasise the surface texture. The pieces undergo a second slightly higher firing to 1100 degrees and I apply wax to seal the surface.
