Price, Elizabeth

I am repeatedly drawn to the human figure. Fascinated by the sometimes comic language of the human body, I use my ceramic figures to explore all kinds of ideas, aspects of life and states of mind. There is often a ‘what if?’ question in my mind when making pieces, and they can be deliberately ambiguous or enigmatic to allow an element of personal interpretation by the viewer. I have also created site-specific installations where small figures (about 20cm tall) explore and inhabit the environments they find themselves in. My sculptures are hollow, built using thin slabs of an off-white, slightly gritty clay that I cut out, a little like dressmaking. The surfaces are decorated with layers of oxides, stains and glazes fired to 1090°C.
