Rhodes, Richard

Richard Rhodes is a self-taught potter/ceramicist working from his studio in Holgate, York; he first learned ceramics at The Creative Studio York, and Sunken Studio in Leeds.

He makes vases, planters and dinnerware from a range of coloured and textured stoneware clays using a potter’s wheel, fired to cone 6 (oxidation). Richard’s work uses a range of metallic and variegated glazes to complement each piece’s form; for some pieces, surface decoration is added using spraypaints. He glazes dynamically, in order to capture the process of making in the finished article.

The pieces are designed to reference classic ceramic forms while reflecting modern style and decoration in the glazing and surface decoration. Richard takes on some limited commission work.
