My work is rooted in storytelling and connection. I create one-off ceramic sculptures that transform people’s personal stories into tangible objects, celebrating the experiences, memories and passions that shape who we are.
I am passionate about listening to people’s stories and interpreting them through clay. My motivation is to help people understand one another better, believing that greater understanding creates stronger, kinder communities in which to live. Each piece is unique because every story is unique, and I aim to capture the character, emotion and individuality of the people behind the work.
The sculptures shown here are inspired by the stories of York’s independent businesses: Little Bear and Bird Flower Shop, SPARK, Conexo Travel Agent, The Hooting Owl Gin Distillery and The Puzzling World of Professor Kettlestring. Through conversations with the owners, I explored their histories, values and ambitions, translating these narratives into ceramic forms that celebrate their creativity and contribution to the city.
I work primarily with hand built stoneware clay, allowing me to create expressive and highly individual forms. Surfaces are decorated using underglaze, glaze, lustre and ceramic decals, building layers of colour, pattern and detail that enrich the storytelling within each piece. I enjoy combining traditional ceramic techniques with contemporary imagery and decorative elements to create work that is both playful and meaningful.
Ultimately, my work is about honouring personal stories and creating objects that encourage curiosity, conversation and connection.
