Katherine is a self taught ceramic artist, having used clay as a therapeutic tool whilst an occupational therapist for 20 years working within inpatient mental health. She set up a ceramic studio at the bottom of the garden after leaving OT two years ago. Katherine specialises in hand-built coiled vessels that are decorated with engobes, slips and glazes. She is inspired by natures’ shapes and colours and even gets inspiration walking to the shops or around towns looking at patterns and how they overlap. The seaside is an important inspiration for Katherine not just the colours and the textures but the rhythmic sounds. She attempts to create a dialogue or a memory in each piece that others can relate to. For Katherine, connection is important between form and decoration, artist and viewer, memory and emotions. Katherine aims to create unique and one off pieces and is fascinated by mark making, textures and drawing on clay as a 3d canvas.
