McGowan-Griffin, Marie

Born in Wales, I spent lots of time in the countryside and on the beach and feel my art is influenced by the natural world, where I feel the best art is produced, all on its own! Now fully retired, I am lucky to work from my own studio in the Staffordshire Moorlands. I am passionate about hand building in clay and sense my feelings getting transformed into shapes as I work, which can be spontaneous and unpredictable, but probably reflective of my current mood (earthy, rough and fluid or structured and with attention to detail). My work both in 2D and 3D has a prominent black element and is commonly an important aspect of my work. I feel it is a powerful colour, with no gender-specific qualities and can be appealing to all, mysterious, bold and indefinable. While working with other ceramics, the integration of black in my work not surprisingly drew me to the Raku, which I find thrilling. I love to experiment with coloured glazes and the unpredictable spectrum of colours, metallic finishes and irregular markings that can be gained from the Raku process. I produce larger ceramic pieces are in Stoneware, but I am currently working on how to create and fire much larger Raku pieces.
