I work in raku and ‘naked raku’ as I feel the finished pots exhibit the ‘elemental’ process of their transformation from earth to ceramic and find this type of firing imparts a ‘sense of life’ within a piece. The unpredictability of surface finishes and the immediacy of the apparently low-tech ‘performance’ of raku firing also appeals. Crackle glazes dress tightly-controlled, thrown or press moulded sculptural forms in a complementary natural, random crazing pattern. Inspiration comes from everywhere but currently aeronautical/spacecraft engine parts, seedpods/nut kernels and flower bracts are particular influences.
