I make thrown and hand built stoneware items for the home. Each piece is individually decorated with naturalistic depictions of British birds, often wrens and blackbirds.
The illustrations are made by carving through a layer of black slip when the clay is leatherhard using a technique called sgraffito. Sgraffito creates a lovely graphic illustrative quality, like lino print, and I enjoy carving into the surface and creating movement and interest in the relief areas. I often add touches of colour detail to the sgraffito and sometimes use coloured glazes inside vessels.
I work from my home studio in Sheffield and I take inspiration from the seasons and what is happening in my garden and the nearby green spaces.
