I developed a love of clay as an extra-curricular part of my Fine Art degree. My painting and photography feeds into elements of my ceramics, as decoration on plates and tiles etc. but what I love about ceramics is that it frees me from my natural inclination to paint with realism. So my work on the surface is still accurately drawn, but I can be free with my sculptures and make them more abstract. I am interested in the spirit of the animal; especially in the study of horses. Glazes and smoke firing techniques are ideal for this, as they bring an element of surprise and movement. And the burnished and smoke fired pieces are particularly tactile.
A lot of my inspiration comes from folk song and the Celtic legends of the British Isles and, alongside, I want to highlight the beauty of our native animals and plants, which are often overlooked. So the wildlife that I see on my local walks feature on pots and in sculpture; and my garden pieces are designed to combine with plants in a creative and cohesive way.
