My personal clay work is about refining forms and surfaces and finding a peaceful moment in a hectic world. Using contrasting tones of clay and layering them to highlight the quality of the stoneware clays, grogs and surface texture, allowing the clay to speak for itself. Glazes are sometimes used in painterly way to emphasise the form. Finding those alone moments are precious, particularly as I am a socially engaged maker, with collaboration and community at the heart of my work. Over the years, I have delivered as an artist on large-scale community and public art projects. Clay might not change the world but as an accessible and transformative medium, it can make a positive contribution to people’s creativity.
